About the Position

SKA SA is currently seeking to appoint an Archive developer to build the online data storage and archive platform for the MeerKAT telescope.

Minimum education requirement:

  • Professionally qualified with a relevant 3 year post-matric qualification

Minimum work experience required:

  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in IT infrastructure engineering with exposure to storage appliances, RAID, SAN implementation, testing, deployment and support. Experience in Linux environments advantageous

Or

  • A minimum of 2 years' post-degree/diploma experience/further education in computer science or electrical/electronic engineering, with exposure to storage appliances, RAID, SAN implementation, testing, deployment and support. Experience in Linux environments advantageous

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal qualities:

  • Knowledge or exposure to tape libraries and tape solutions
  • Knowledge or exposure to databases and database management systems
  • Understanding of internet concepts, protocols and technologies
  • Desire to continuously learn, problem solve and acquire new skills with cutting edge technology
  • Analytical and problem-solving capability
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • May utilise a network of contacts relevant to the SKA SA

Duties Include (but not limited) to:

  • Develop the SDP archive
  • Development of the user interface for the SDP archive
  • Development of the search engine for the SDP archive
  • Develop and maintain archive authentication and authorization
  • Research new tools, technologies and best practice
  • Pilot new technology implementation

Tasks May Include:

  • Occasional after hours support
  • Provide expert technical guidance and input
  • Consulting with astronomers and system engineering concerning maintenance of the archive
  • Consulting with system engineering staff to evaluate interface between SDP systems and other MeerKAT systems
  • Modifying existing archive to correct errors, to adapt it to new hardware or to upgrade interfaces and improve performance
  • Researching, designing and developing the SDP archive
  • Security and incident response
  • Patch and software update management
  • Conducting research and improving or developing concepts, theories, instrumentation, software and operational methods related to archive

Experience

  • Debian-based Linux, preferably Ubuntu
