About the Position

Human Resource (HR)/Payroll Administrator

(Based in Cape Town, Western Cape)

The SAAO is the National Facility for Optical and Infrared Astronomy of the National Research Foundation (NRF). Its headquarters are in Cape Town, while its telescopes are at Sutherland in the Northern Cape. Distributed between the two sites, SAAO employs about 130 people, many of them scientists and engineers, and is contracted to operate SALT (the Southern African Large Telescope) on behalf of the international SALT Foundation. SAAO is the premier optical/infrared research facility on the African continent, with global research and outreach collaborations, contributing to SET human capital development for South Africa.

We invite applications for the position of HR/Payroll Administrator as described below:

Key responsibilities:

  • Maintaining the computerised payroll system
  • Handling of all staff queries relating to salaries / staff benefits as well as the processing of applications, changes and terminations
  • Providing monthly reports such as leave balance reports to line managers and statistical information required for management reporting
  • Accurately capturing of leave, filing, maintaining and updating of leave records in line with organisational policies & procedures
  • Ensuring the effective maintenance and management of all personnel records
  • General HR Administration

Minimum Requirements

  • National Diploma (or equivalent qualification) in HR
  • Relevant training on payroll packages
  • 2-3 years relevant HR/Payroll experience
  • strong computer skills with knowledge of MS Word and Excel

Desirable

  • Fully competent in Income Tax calculations
  • Knowledge of UIF & Workmen's Compensation
