About the Position


iThemba LABS seeks to appoint a Systems Engineer who is passionate about systems infrastructure engineering and proficient in configuring, managing and using a wide range of complex IT infrastructures and technologies. As a Systems Engineer, you will support iThemba LABS infrastructure and have a direct impact on system design, enhancement and support practises. Our ideal candidate must have strong focus and keen understanding with expertise in storage, virtualization, messaging, open source technologies, data networking, and back office infrastructure.

Minimum Requirements:

  • IT Degree / Diploma and commensurate experience as well as a vendor related certification (for example MCSE / RHCE).
  • 6 - 9 Years' Windows and Linux server management and networking experience
  • 4 years' in a mission critical environment.
  • Practical project management experience.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for the planning, commissioning, management, backup and recovery of Servers, Storage Area Networks and Network Attached Storage devices.
  • Actively participates in capacity planning for the organisation in terms of Information Technology.
  • Responsible for the configuration, operational support, proactive monitoring and maintenance of all servers including software.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of security policies, procedures and measures in a networked environment. Manage access and security of systems in accordance with policies.
  • Determine and ensure the long term technology requirements are included in the overall information systems planning of the organisation.
  • Responsible for the installation, maintenance, patching, configuration and integrity of computer software in order to improve the reliability and performance of systems.
  • Executing and testing of the backup policies and IT Service Continuity Plans within the environment to ensure data redundancy and availability.
  • Together with the IT manager develop strategies to support organisational needs
  • Responsible for change management procedures relating to the installation and testing of all enhancements to Information Technology infrastructure and software introduced to the environment.
  • Produce systems that are scalable, automated, and well-documented, and train others to take on operations.
